Circle hooks for catfish « Thread Started on Jan 17, 2008, 1:48pm »
I am trying to learn more about circle hooks and want to try them this year for catfish. What size what brand etc. Do I still use my normal fish finder slide rig. Dont know much about them except that I know they work, so I want to give them a try.
My trips are limited so its not like I am doing it every weekend but I figure one less gut hooked fish is better.

Circle hooks are all I use for Catfishing. They work great. You have to have your reel locked and in a holder for the hooks to set though. I don't pick up my rod until there is steady pressure and the rod is almost touching the water. The hardest part of switching to circle hooks is learning to NOT set the hook. I use Owner 10/0 on the James. I'm going to 5/0's for the catfish toury on Lake Anna next weekend

hey Ace, thanks - I pulled this off the Cabelas website - which of these Owner circles are you using? I initially assumed maybe the salt water(SSW) hooks but not too sure now.

Mine are the exactly like the SSW, but they are not stainless in color. They are black. They only store I have been able to find the 10/0 size is Greentop. I would say 90% of the hook-ups are in the corner of the mouth with these. I am very happy with them. I only went to the Owners because I needed a larger circle hook fo the James. Prior to finding the Owners I used Gamakatsu Octopus Circle hooks. Size 8/0. Those work well also. I was very leary of switching from j hooks to circle hooks last year just because you don't set the hook and I had never used them. You couldn't pay me to switch back to j hooks. Circle hooks are great
