I have watched enough other guys catch fish while I don't to realize that using bait caught from the lake is pretty important. Anyone have any tips on where and how to catch bait for stripers? I have a cast net, and can kinda throw it (tips on that would be appreciated as well).
Thanks!

Nobody knows how to catch bait? Remember, forums only work when you share what you know...

I cant say I am a wizard at catching baits but I have seen some guys throwing around the Christopher Run area and the bridge thats there. I ahve occassionally found some nice piles of bait. But I cant say I know their pattern. My guess is the one guide that I have seen his name on here Jim Hemby might know how. Maybe the other guy Teddy has some thoughts.

I spent a a lot of time trying to unsuccessfully throw a cast net. I did a google search and came across this web site posted below This guy developed an easy throw net. I ordered one and just got it in last week. My first throw with it was perfect and my 14 year old nephew had a perfect throw on his first toss. I can say without reservation that the thing is worth every penny. As for where to catch bait, I've always heard the best place is way back in the coves or stream mouths. One place I've seen folks is back in by Anna Point www.easythrow.net/abouteasythrow.html

I went with the one he recommends which I believe is the 4' with the 1/4". I actually took my net down to the lake so I don't have it in front of me.

Thanks! I'll have to get one of those. I've been bass fishing in reservoirs all my life. I just got a center console about 2 months ago, so fishing big waters is like starting all over again. I'm trying to learn the ropes on Striper fishing.

I've only been out striper fishing twice so far. Caught one little one (15") on a Rapala 7" X-rap around 11:00 p.m. Those guys put up a fight! I would love to hang a big one! It seems like live bait is definitely the way to go. Throwing 7" Rapala's in darkness for hours on end wears out the wrist and hand. lol

I tried to catch bait this weekend and failed miserably. I was throwing the cast net OK, but just couldnt seem to get anything. I know they were down there as my graph was black. I'm not sure if you're supposed to let it sink as deep as you can or what. Acelaserna - I hope I didnt lead you wrong with the net....maybe we need bigger ones???
I'm definitely going to set up a trip with Jim which I've been meaning to do since last year. I did go out with another guide two years ago for bass/stripers and we nailed a bunch of stripers. We were using a Rebel DD-22 with the hooks off and a 2' leader attached to the back eye on which was tied a white 1/4 oz. bucktail jig. I've dragged this combo through countless schools of stripers and have yet to catch one. Any idea why? I've tried all different speeds as well - including use of my trolling motor.
