Had my least productive day of 2007 today - even 28 degree days in Feb/March were better. I fished north of the 522 bridge - hadn't been there in a while. Since I keep my boat at Sturgeon Creek - I fished my way out to the main lake and caught 2 dinks - was skunked up North. Not sure if the bass are in Post Spawn, pre front, too many wave runners, or I didn't flip a quarter to the fish gods - but I only got a couple of ticks . I threw a crankbait, spinner bait, and flipped a shakey head YUM Dinger - water temp was 73 at 7AM and warmed up to 76 by 2PM....Would sure like to see more posts by everyone - I'll do my best to add some as well....

I was out on Sunday (5/13) and got a nice dose of post-front and post-spawn. Defintely slow, except for the wind. Boated two keepers - one on a junebug senko from a main lake point and one on a junebug 8" ribbon tail t-rig. Both fish were in 7-10 feet of water. I lost a third fish that was good size - also on a junebug senko. In terms of location, one came from the Pamunkey branch, past Hunter's landing and the other came from just past the 208 bridge. Lost the bigger fish just shy of the first bridge in the N. Anna branch.
I tried crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and rattle-traps as well - all to no avail.
Still better than sitting in the office.

So the Junebug color is the trick. I have some of the new zoom finesse worms in a Mardi Gras color that I am dying to try out.

I am shocked that the water temp you were seeing produced very little. I am new to the board and will try and post up as much as possible but only get out one day a week or so.

Hey Gman I think you just got caught in the middle so to speak--a combination of the post spawn rest period and the third wave moving up. So the bite is scattered in several different water columns. During this time I like to do what is called junk fish which is just running around fishing a lot of different stuff. Like shallow grass and rocks in the am, a little points fishing, some brush piles, back of the coves shallow cranking, deepwater docks, etc. Mix up your lure selection but a weightless YUM dinger is hard to beat. If you find one thing that's being good to you stick with it but I bet you it changes, then you change. Stick to it don't get discouraged you could be at home cutting the dad-blastad grass.

Junebug is the only color I ever use for soft plastics. I have read countless reports of people using watermelon colors, but I have never been able to get the same results that I get with Junebug. I like the contrast and the visibility in deeper water.
Teddy - is there still a wave of spawners left? I figured by this point that they'd all be done. Any thoughts on where there might be some bedding fish left?

Teddy - Thanks for the input - I'm already formulating a game plan for my next outing. Based on others replies - I may need to invest in some junebug color as well for my plastics. I generally fish watermelon and dip the tip in a chart dye.

ssullivan-yes there is another wave not as big as the last but pretty substanial for a third wave I think that speaks good of the lake and the increase in numbers of bass and bodes well for this years spawn. I saw the best numbers at mid-lake from sturgeon to the splits. But there are a few scattered up the North Anna. Happy Hunting
Junebug works really well at this time because it gives off that blue hue of blue gill. Two things blue gill are bed robbers but most of all when they start spawning bass return the favor they are a very sought after food source for bass right after they get over their post-spawn rest period. And sully makes a great point about the contrast in deeper water and to add to that that same contrast helps in stained water. Never go on the water without a plan A,B,C, and if you get to D just load the boat and go home and help the wife with the dishes.

Yes, thanks Teddy. I've only been fishing the lake for about a year and every piece of info is much appreciated.
