I am going to be spending several mid-week days at Lake Anna next week. I would appreciate any tips on current tactics, patterns and locations to try for bass. I gather from reading the other postings that the topwater bite can still be pretty good early. If left to my own devices I would fish Three Channel Hump, Dean's Rocks, the Rose Valley Cemetery and Pea Hump once the sun is up. Historically, I do mediocre at best on Lake Anna so any advice would be appreciated.

I don't fish the up lake area enough any more to be of much help there. We used to fish it years ago - use to throw a spinner bait in the grass and weeds - always caught fish. Now I spend most of my time down lake - I like clear water - I like to see what I can't catch check some of my other post I put some spots - around dike 2 is pretty productive. deep docks and points also the rip rap. Channels in the creek arms - Contrary, Sturgeon (they put tx fish back there) also get up int the no wake areas of Levy and Duke - you can find fish stacked up on the channels. I am not big on slow, methodical fishing - I try but it is not my style - but you can catch a bunch of fish that way in the creeks. OK I will give up a goto spot - up Contrary Creek after the first s's on the right there is a set of community docks - fairly deep - go to the inside of these and there is an archway - sign says for homeowners only or something like that but these docks will give up nice fish on a consistent basis IF they are not real busy - midweek should be a great time to hit them up. I fish docks with a 1/4 oz jig and 5" Kalin Smoke salt and pepper - chartreuse dipped tail and garlic bang - I let it drop about 2 feet off bottom and slowly start reeling. If you think you are dragging weeds or snagging something - set the hook. Good Luck and let us know how you make out... Tight lines - Bill

On the water at 5:45 -
Today was like "practice my casting day" - I really struggled to catch fish -
spent some time at the 208 bridge - lots of bait fish and topwater activity, but I couldn't a bite.
Trolled around Jetts island - nothing
Went up lake past Hunter landing and landed 3 fish throwing to shore with shade and cover - was using a split tail 5" YUM dinger
By noon there was a lot of recreational activity on the lake, I wasn't catching fish, and I had a guy buzz by me full throttle with 10 yards of where I was fishing - so i yelled and waved, and decided that it was time to go.....I'm off to Canada Aug 8 - 14 - fishing for smaillies and Pike on an annual trip. It'll be a good break from the weekend madness that is Anna this time of year.
Good luck during the week sneadgin - it's the best time to fish

Thanks bill1wts and gman for the reports. I got out several times and, as usual, found the fishing mediocre. I was out during the rain Wednesday morning and it seemed the fish were willing as long as the rain was falling. Between showers the activity stopped and it died completey when the sun broke through. I caught one keeper sized bass with a bass colored Pop-R on the eastern shore at the end of Pigeon Creek. Dave Faunlteroy showed me this spot years ago and I have found it to be a pretty reliable top water flat. There are a number of stumps along the shore and between the boat houses. Bill, I tried your go to spot and found no one home. On Saturday morning I caught one bass with a Carolina rigged lizard in the upper end of the North Anna near Hellems Point. Total for the week, 2 bass & 2 catfish.
